The students in my classroom are warm, friendly and full of curiosity. Even though they are Bilingual Chinese students, they are not afraid of asking questions or researching for the answer to their questions.
The students in my class are a caring and friendly community builders who enjoy working with hands-on activities.
Even though their English is not perfect, my students are smart, motivated, and love to learn whether it may be about insects, animals or why we need daylight savings time. They keep me motivated and on my toes!
My school is classified as a Title 1 school, meaning the majority of the students come from low-income families and a majority of student body qualify for free lunch. The students in my class have just arrived from China or come from homes where English is not their first language. My students only have the opportunity to speak, write and listen to English when they're at school or after school. With the standards being so rigorous, I take Reading and Writing very seriously because not only am I trying to transition them to move on from the Bilingual classroom setting to a Monolingual classroom, but I am preparing my students to become life-long learners!
My Project
My class currently launched the Bridge study for Social Studies. I had never imagined their thirst for knowing more about bridges could be so much! Everyday, they would ask questions or have wonderings about this topic. Even though we just launched the study, my students are always hungry to know more and more about why a certain bridge was built, which bridge is the longest or shortest or basic facts about bridges in New York.
With the books that I plan to order, the students in my class will be able to conduct their own research and answer their own questions. This teaches them independence and they take control of their own learning as opposed to me 'spoon feeding' information to them and memorizing facts. My main goal at the end of this bridge study is to publish our very own book of bridges made by the students in my class.
With these information books on Bridges, the students in my class will learn to do their own research independently and share it with fellow classmates/peers.
The students in my class will take ownership of their own learning and it will prepare them to answer their own questions on bridges. It would be interesting to see what happens after students read these books on bridges and see where it leads them to go in this study.
