About My Students
Our high school robotics began in 2010 from a vision of two students, Kyle and Chris. Their vision developed into a student-led STEM program. The tablets and video camera requested will be used in STEM classes and FIRST Robotics to share out their progressive work with other schools and the community.
Students in the STEM and robotics program at our school want to share with the community their program and success to inspire future students to join the robotics team and to recruit community mentors. The STEM students have formulated the following plan to expand public awareness of our STEM and robotics program. The goals are as follows: host monthly outreach events showcasing different student and team events; continue summer STEM and Robotics camp for local elementary and middle school students; send in monthly feature articles in local papers; mentor 4 feeder schools and develop the West Hawaii STEM + Robotics Expansion Initiative; host annual West Hawaii Robotics Exploration Showcase; and maintain a weekly updated website.
Additionally, equipment will be used for planning, recording and disseminating team information as well as photo journaling the different STEM programs and events such as VEX, FIRST, Boatbill, Science Olympiad, Pacific Symposium and a science fair.
The integrated STEM + Robotics program prepares students with the STEM skills that they need to be successful in college and beyond. We have graduated students to go on to Ivy league and top colleges across the country. The students can program, design and present their learning in a professional manner. They are currently partnered with NASA in an experiment which will be tested on the moon in 2016. The students have won numerous competitions such as the Engineering Inspiration Award, First Chairman Award and VEX Excellence Award. Every STEM competition has a programmer, designer and team leader so that students learn to work collaboratively. The tablets and video camera will be used to photo journal and record success and to share out achievements in a professional manner. Students will use teamwork in displaying their outstanding STEM skills to engage future generations and the community to support STEM initiatives in the community.
In Their Own Words
"We will share our love for science and robotics with the community and engage new students to join our STEM program as well as garnish community support. I am a junior and I have participated in VEX, FIRST, Botball, Science Olympiad, Pacific Symposium, CyberPatriot, Skills USA, STEM Camp and Science fair. I spend countless hours in the STEM lab designing and programming. I have made lifelong friends and developed amazing 21st century skills." - Courtney, 11th Grade
"Utilizing this technology, we will be able to create a conducive environment where all of us students will be able to work more efficiently on our tasks. The primary use of the materials would be in helping us collect and gather data in a more businesslike manner. Bringing this project to life would benefit all of us by preparing us to work in scenarios similar to those in real jobs. We will also share out our accomplishments with the community." - Ezra, 11th grade
"This project is important to us as students as STEM is the future for our world and our community. It is so important for us as students to develop 21st century skills so that we can be successful in the future. Not enough students are engaged in STEM subjects in our small town. It is really important for us to get future generations and the community involved in our awesome program so that our STEM programs flourish and we have the skills to become future leaders." - Caleb, 12th grade
