My Students

My students walk into our school library with excitement in their eyes. They can't wait to be able to let their imagination go wild in the library Makerspace. You can see students taking apart and putting together computers, designing 3-D models, constructing structures, learning about circuitry, or playing board games. You will also see students curled up in the corner reading a book or asking me for a new book for them to read. It always puts a smile on my face when they come back to me, after reading a book, to tell me how much they loved a book.

The library has become a safe place, where my students have an opportunity to experience things that they can't access otherwise because of their socioeconomic background, and one of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.

This project will help us learn and appreciate the greatness of the diversity in our school and the world around us.

My Project

As a school librarian, I am always encouraging my teachers to read and find books that our students will feel they can relate to. We started the first ProjectLIT chapter in our school system. ProjectLIT is a grassroots movement that was started by a group of high school students in Tennessee. The focus is on diverse books and social justice topics. This is year three of being a chapter and it has really helped increase the reading culture in our school and to be able to see themselves in the books they read.

This project will allow us to expand our reach by allowing some of our elective classes to do whole-class book studies on these books and will allow them to have the time to really delve into the books and have great discussions.

A Song for a Whale is one of the most touching stories that I have read. It is a story of a deaf girl growing up as the only deaf person in her home and going to school as the only deaf person in her school. Communication is a constant struggle and all she wants to do is be understood. One day, her science teacher introduced her to Blue 55. Blue 55 is a whale that is like no other whale and he also can't communicate with others around him. She sets out to create a song that Blue 55 can understand so finally, he can hear something he understands. The copies of Becoming Muhammad Ali will be added to our other copies to give us a full class set. This novel in verse will introduce my students to a young Cassius Clay and his struggles growing up during racial unrest and his journey to become the best.
