Students with autism struggle with social skills that come naturally to many of us. They need direct, explicit instruction on how to interact with others on a daily basis. Michelle Garcia Winner has created a social skills curriculum that will address the skills my students need the most help with.
The students in my classroom are in grades 2, 3, and 5.
They are all diagnosed with autism and face many challenges on a daily basis. However, I admire their dedication toward learning and their enthusiasm for the things and people they care about. My students are able to succeed with direct, specialized instruction tailored to their individual needs. Although teaching students in this population is challenging, if I could tell anyone one thing about my students it would be that THEY ARE WORTH IT!
My Project
I am requesting some of the materials that go along with Michelle Garcia Winner's Social Thinking Curriculum. Think Social is a book that provides methods for teaching social thinking and lessons that can be used in the curriculum. The SuperFlex curriculum is really neat because it address the social thinking concepts through the use of comic book characters who take on some of the same challenges the students also face. This part of the curriculum will provide a fun and interactive way for students to become engaged in what they are learning! I am also requesting two posters, one for whole body listening, and one that displays the characters in the SuperFlex curriculum that will be used as visuals in the classroom.
Helping students with autism develop social skills as early as possible is critical to how they will feel about themselves and their relationships for the rest of their lives.
I have read a lot about this curriculum and the research behind it, and I firmly believe these materials will help my students develop these important skills. Please help us on this incredible journey!
