I teach a diverse population of third grade students in a San Francisco public school. Approximately 65% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and half of my students are English-Language Learners. In August, we traveled back in time to study the Ohlone Indians of the Bay. In September, we toured the streets of San Francisco on a bus, and in October, we strolled through history on a mural walk in the Mission District. Come December, our classes convened in City Hall, while in March we ventured out to spy the details of Victorian architecture. Last, we tarried through the hidden cultural riches of Chinatown. We have but a few more stops on our journey before our San Francisco social studies unit closes.... BUT WAIT!! *YOU* have the key to change our FINAL destination. We'd like to include on our itinerary, as the culminating event to our year of study, a fabulous BAY CRUISE ADVENTURE, courtesy of the Blue & Gold Fleet. What a wonderful opportunity for our young historians and geographers to see the "City by the Bay" ON the Bay! This would be a first time experience for our students to see San Francisco from a different and new perspective as they review the facts and folklore of the year's study. Even at the reduced eduational rate, we do not have the funds to cover the cost of this experience. It is at this time we are asking for help to cover the ticket price for 39 of our third grade students. Thank you for helping to make a lasting impression and memory for our "traveling" urban students.
