My Students

Through shared experiences our classroom aims to empower students mathematically & holistically. Students will remain together, with me as their teacher, for 4 years of HS. Students work in groups daily for 90min. Each day, arms linked, we end with the mantra "None of us is as strong as all of us!"

My students and I are apart of The Algebra Project (AP) , founded by Civil Rights legend and MacArthur Genius fellow Bob Moses.

AP is a nonprofit organization and curriculum that helps improve the math skills of our most marginalized and disenfranchised students with under-performing math scores. The goal is to prepare these students for college level math for college credit at the time of graduation, and provide them the foundation for future careers in science and technology. The program also incorporates civics education within the math class, as a way to help students take charge of their lives and improve their community. My students are perseverant, inquisitive, and inspiring individuals entering the 9th grade. Many of them just completed a 3-week summer induction program. Over that time they become a "squad", working towards a common goal of creating a classroom environment that promotes and supports their ongoing pursuit of learning and understanding mathematics.

My Project

An essential component of The Algebra Project classroom is students having the opportunity to teach one another. The document camera will allow for students to share and receive feedback on their work and learning with and from their peers. Another essential component is building student agency and willingness to question within their learning process. The graphing calculators will allow students to question and explore the wonders of algebra as well as begin to understand the basics of programing.

Your donation to our classroom will help us in creating an environment that promotes learning, questioning, and exploring; not just doing.

This project will help empower my students in taking charge of their own education, giving them the opportunity to lead the way.
