Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a first year teacher at a priority school in SW DC. Our school has been labeled as a "40-40" school meaning that we are among the lowest performing schools in DCPS. 100% of our kiddos receive free and reduced lunch. Our school population also has a high number of special education students. In my room, I have a variety of learners, including students with ADHD, speech impediments, learning disorders and emotional disturbance.

We don't receive supplies from parents or the school, so we are trying to fill the gap with help from donors!

With your help, we can create a loving, warm learning environment for my 1st graders where they have access to all the materials they need to learn!

My Project

I am so excited that some awesome donors have purchased magnetic letters for my first grade class to use! Throughout the past few months, I've noticed that the biggest gap in my kids' literacy is a lack of sight word knowledge. Not knowing sight words is holding us back from moving on to higher level of texts. To remediate this, I'm creating a sight word literacy center. Students will spend 20 minutes a day practicing writing and reading sight words with magnetic letters.

To complete this center, I need materials to make and store the center.

I plan on printing sight words on cardstock and then laminating them, putting them on rings and storing them in the boxes I've requested. This will help students to easily access the materials, and we won't waste any time passing them out! I've also requested expo markers and magnetic erasers so that we can practice writing sight words on whiteboards during this center. I'm confident that by creating this hands-on center students will be able to learn and remember their sight words!
