My Students
How do you like to cozy up with a book? Relaxing on the rug? Reading with a friend? Lying on the couch? Maybe sitting in your favorite chair? In my second grade classroom, it's not uncommon to see students getting comfy with a book in any of these ways!
Part of what makes teaching second grade so much fun is that my students know how to read.
Now, I get to teach them how to LOVE to read. I teach in the tight-knit community of East Boston where many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students are bilingual and in the process of learning English as a second language. They are a bright and eager group and positively VORACIOUS readers!
My Project
A New Listening Center--- A listening center is a critical piece of a well-balanced literacy curriculum. Listening to a book on a tape or CD provides lower readers the opportunity to access more complex texts and practice comprehension skills. The listening center in my classroom is a beloved center, but all too often our old tape player fails to work, leaving curious audiences disappointed.
New Books--- My classroom library is something I take pride in. Comfy benches and soft pillows help students relax with a book-- something which will help them build a love of reading. But our books don't fit my students' reading levels. Many of the books are too easy, too worn, or too challenging for my second graders. I need a new collection of books that can grow with my growing readers.
With our brand new listening center and earbuds for each student, my second graders will have a clean, high-tech way to access complex texts and strengthen their reading comprehension.
Our new classroom library sets will engage my voracious readers right at their level as they cozy up with a book.
