This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be my first year teaching seventh and eighth grade, math and science. For three years I taught fifth grade and last year I taught 6th grade. I want to start my first year with my 7th and 8th graders strong with as real life tools they will use when computing higher level math problems.
Many of our students experience trauma at home.
However, my students come to school with an enthusiasm for learning. The teachers at my school are devoted to addressing student needs. We are trained in the curriculum to help support our second language learners to succeed. My students are exceptional in their ability to overcome. Part of my job is to create a classroom that is relevant to the 21st century! This comes with a lot of preparation, but also the right materials for our environment.
My Project
In my school district, our math scores are very low according to SBAC data. I believe a lot of this has to do with access to materials. Our students are expected to learn Pre-Algebra and Algebra content so that they are ready for High School and beyond, but lack materials such as a scientific calculator. I do not want my students going to high school not knowing how to effectively and efficiently use a higher level calculator.
For example, in both 7th and 8th grades students are expected to learn about functions, including sine, cosine, and tangent.
They will need a scientific calculator to help them compute these values and then use them to solve real world problems. Many of my students have never really used a higher level calculator before so they will need to learn these basic skills to be reading for graphing calculators in high school.
I will also be teaching Science for 7th and 8th grade and will be integrating their math skills into the science classroom to solve real world scientific problems. They will need access to a scientific calculator in order for us to achieve higher standards in math and science.
