My students need a variety of building sets such as K’NEX, Picasso Tiles, and Straw Connectors so they can harvest their engineering skills and really test their creative imagination!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Engineering Lab serves students Kindergarten through 5th grade, so every student (all 440!) at our elementary school uses the Lab. Our school is a Title 1 school where two-thirds of our school population are English Language Learners, so hands-on visual learning activities in Engineering is important for their language and academic growth. About 95% of our kids are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Our engineers are CRAZY about hands-on building.
Our schedule does not allow for every class/grade level to come on a weekly basis, so when a class does get to come to the Lab, they are super eager to participate in the Engineering Design Process with the time that they have. They love to plan and build and see what others have created as well.
My Project
Oir students are very fortunate to have a hands-on Engineering Lab at their school! Not all schools have one of these, so they love spending time in their lab. Currently, the lab only has one set of wooden blocks, some mixed Legos that were donated by a parent, and plastic cubes typically used for math instruction. But these builders crave more building opportunities! A variety of building sets would be devoured by these eager engineers, who have very limited materials to build to their hearts' contents.
My engineers love to engage in free building time where they can use their imagination to build whatever they can dream up!
This gives them a great opportunity to have collaborative conversations with each other about what they are building and the purpose behind it. Because we have limited building materials, only a certain number of students can build at a time. A variety of building sets would allow all students to all build at the same time using a wide variety of different building materials.
