Most students would much rather be watching tv, but if they had a great library of books, they may choose to read instead!
My students are in the 7th grade in a large middle school right outside a major city.
They are in a self-contained classroom due to their special needs that range from specific learning disabilities to autism. I am their science and social studies teacher. Most are 2-3 grade levels behind in their reading skills than other students their age. Despite their struggles, you will never meet a more hardworking and amazing group of students!
My Project
My students need a wider selection of classroom books about history to read. Many of my students become interested in topics that we are learning about in history, including the Great Migration or the assembly line. They also want to learn more about historical leaders including Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. Since most struggle to read, it would be so amazing if they had books they are interested in reading! Not only are they learning more about important events and people in history, they are also improving their reading skills!
Reading is the foundation of learning, and when students have difficulty reading, they are often reluctant to read.
My hope is that by providing my students books they are interested in, they will overcome their fear of reading one historical book at a time!
