My Students
Everyday I ask my kids "Are you the best?". They reply loudly, "We are the best!". I want them to maintain this confidence by providing them with the tools they need to learn.
I teach 6 boys with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
All of them are excited to come to school everyday. I remind them that we are like a family.
My students are motivated to learn. However, because of their disabilities, they do not have the skills of typical peers their age. We lack many teaching resources in our low income school. It is my job to make sure they succeed, but we need the resources to push them forward.
My Project
My boys are 13 and 14 years old, but they are not on the same educational level as their typical peers. My students still need to learn basic skills. Therefore, they need materials to learn important concepts such as the value of money with a cash register, math concepts of greater than and less than with manipulatives, along with learning how to form letters, words and sentences. The materials that I am seeking will be used on a daily basis in small groups and during one to one instruction. I teach math and literacy everyday, thus we will get a lot use with these materials.
My students and I will be very grateful to receive these materials because their use will spike their motivation.
For example, we learn about greater than and less than. This is a difficult concept to learn for my students without physical manipulatives to use for demonstration and practice. With the proper tools, my students will be able to show significant progress and show everyone that they are the best!
