Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Teaching Fellow in an Astoria, Queens public middle school. Our school is an underserved school in that we have very little room in the budget to provide a lot of after-school programs, extra-curricular activities, or electives. I do have the pleasure of teaching Drama next year as well as Special Education. However, because Drama is a new addition to our curriculum, we have very little theatre texts and resources. Because Drama is one of the only classes that we are able to offer outside of the core curriculum, I have high hopes for the program.
I want to create a well-rounded, educational and exciting theatre program for my students, but it is necessary to have the right resources. First and foremost, we need a variety of theatre texts, from scripts and plays to theatre history books. My goal is to learn about how different cultures use theatre around the world, as our school is extremely diverse. I want to find and produce plays that celebrate all of the different cultures represented in our school.
I also plan on incorporating a lot of creative writing in the classroom, and so we need a lot of basic office supplies such as filler paper and pencils. Because technical theatre is such an important aspect of studying drama, and because a solid technical theatre background may give students another vocational option, I have also asked for colored pencils, paper, and crayons so that I can teach them about lighting, costume, and set design.
Lastly, I want to have each student create a Theatre Portfolio that includes the students' work from the year. The purpose of the portfolio is two-fold; a portfolio will help these students see their growths as artists and it will provide them with materials for those students wishing to pursue drama in the high school or college level. For these portfolios, all we need are simple folders that can be purchased from any office supply store.
My goal is to reinvent the classroom...I want to make our space a place where the students can go to be creative, independent thinkers as well as study the works of those playwrights before them that have inspired me to be a better teacher and an artist. With your help, I know I can expose these children to a world outside of video games and music videos...a world where Shakespeare's works reside on the same shelf as original pieces written by my students. Studying theatre gives students self-esteem, provides them with a creative outlet in which to express themselves, allows them to experience other cultures, and is a perfect opportunity for them to work and collaborate in groups.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
