Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year Teaching Fellow at a junior high school in Astoria, Queens. I have the pleasure of teaching both Special Education and Theatre, and I hope in this coming year to combine the two to make a wonderful, new program. Because Theatre Arts is a new addition to the curriculum, we have a very limited amount of supplies with which to work. While I want to teach my students that they can create theatre and art without spending a lot of money, we still need some basic supplies to get us started...mainly books, DVDs, scripts, drafting supplies, and basic stage equipment to use in the classroom. I have some fantastic ideas for the upcoming year...mask-making, playwrighting, stage design, acting, improvisation, and musical theatre, just to name a few! We can't do it without your support. Our kids are talented, creative, and energetic. Most of them have never seen a play, much less been a part of one. I know that studying theatre will boost their self-esteem, hone their analytical and writing skills, and provide an outlet for which to express themselves. Moreover, our school plays will help instill a badly needed sense of school spirit into our halls. We are planning a Fall play as well as a Spring musical, giving each and every student ample opportunities to be as involved as they wish. Our school serves over 1,000 students, and theatre classes will be provided for about 300 students. I also hope to combine Special Education and Theatre, using dramatic techniques to reinforce the curriculum, practice creative writing skills, and to discuss and deconstruct social issues. My ultimate goal is to instill in my students a sincere appreciation for the arts ...one that could possibly lead to a career in the arts and entertainment industry or perhaps just their life-long support of the New York arts community. It is amazing how just a few books and supplies can make this dream a reality. I sincerely thank you for your time and consideration.
