"Financial literacy is an issue that should command our attention because many Americans are not adequately organizing finances for their education, health care and retirement."- Ron Lewis. Developing my students' financial literacy has definitely commanded my attention!
We are a Title I public elementary school in a large urban community in Missouri, the Show Me State.
Our school is comprised of gender specific classrooms to promote gender specific learning and teaching strategies. I teach third grade boys, many of whom are somewhat reluctant paper and pencil writers. We work on math and money problems through whole group instruction with students working independently to solve problems on white boards and then show ("solve and show") their answers to me and to the rest of the class to compare answers. My students enjoy math and when we begin a lesson they are usually willing to work on solving real world word problems such as determining correct change and deciding if you can pay for a group of items with a set budget.
My Project
I am requesting 22 Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablets to work out financial literacy problems.
The challenges with having to use white boards often hinder students' abilities to work problems out quickly and effectively which leads to student frustration and diminished excitement/engagement. These challenges include keeping track of a dry erase marker, keeping dry erase markers from drying out, keeping the caps to dry erase markers, erasing dark marks on the boards and being able to read writing over previously semi-erased marks. We have few whiteboard erasers so students usually have to attempt to erase their boards with wet tissues.
The Boogie Board LCD e-writers will promote greater engagement during personal finance literacy lessons and group activities. Students will be able to work out problems with a Boogie Board and their fingers with nothing else required or standing in their way. Students may transfer answers to paper during testing. Having the boards erase by simply pressing a button will allow students to be ready to move on to a new problem with little lag time.
My students are struggling with financial literacy as evidenced by recent paper and pencil work submitted.
These Boogie Boards will encourage students to work longer and more thoroughly on finance related problems as they are much more engaging and student friendly than our traditional well used whiteboards. The continued replacement cost of dry erase markers and erasers will be eliminated with use of these Boogie Boards. Help us "boogie" into being a greener class while learning about finance!
