This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Spark my students' interest in reading and open their imagination to the wonderful world of exciting characters and adventure! Help me a foster a love for reading in my classroom.
You will be donating to a bunch of very special kindergarteners.
My students are considered in the "highest poverty" bracket and many of them come from the nearby shelters. While my students do not have much in this world in the way of material possessions, they have more than enough love to give and are eager to learn. They have beautiful spirits and there is not a day that goes by that they do not make me laugh. Due to the fact that my school is in a high poverty area we are in desperate need of supplies, guided reading books being at the top of the list. In addition, New York City has suffered from numerous budget cuts. Due to this fact, Teacher's Choice money (money we can use for our classrooms) was cut drastically. I now have very little money to spend on supplies, materials, and books for my classroom. This is unfortunate because the students are the ones who are suffering the most due to lack of supplies.
My Project
I want to get my students excited about books and spark their interest in reading. This has to start with books that motivate them to read, and also books that are on their level. The “Leveled Books Classroom” sets are perfect for my students because they provide engaging stories, colorful illustrations and gradually increase in difficulty. This is important because books that are too hard frustrate them and books that are too easy bore them which hinders the reading process. These books will help students develop reading skills such as fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness, as well as build confidence in their reading ability.
I am requesting 7 book sets of guided reading books with bins for my students.
These books will not only allow me to scaffold their learning by being their guide but it will provide books that are "just right" for the students' reading level for independent practice. Your help will ensure that my students will become expert readers and be ready for first grade.
