Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher at a high-need public school in a low-income neighborhood in Chicago.

Technology is a vital part of the world today, but like anything it costs money. My students are bright and eager learners, but unfortunately are at such a disadvantage because they are not exposed to technology like other kids their age across the country. Most of my students do not have computers at home, and the few do have computers, do not have internet. We have computer class once a week at my school, but all they really get to do is play computer games that don't challenge their intellect.

I would like to get two notebooks (lap tops) in my classroom to develop computer and internet savvy second graders. Throughout the year, the computers will give students an opportunity to do group or individual research projects on historical events or various science topics. Students will also be able to use the computers during writing workshop to develop word processing skills. Additionally, students will be able to take advantage of the numerous educational reading and math websites.

Having computers and internet is a given in practically all middle-class homes and classrooms. I hope you would agree, my students deserve the same opportunity! Your help will ensure that they are getting the high-quality education they need in order to maximize their potential and become productive members of a technologically driven society!
