My Students

Do you remember the anticipation of recess? How exciting it was to be free from your desks/teachers, to be able to run and play with peers? How exciting to be able to play with a variety of items and do whatever you please! Now imagine your in a small school yard enclosed by fencing with nothing to do

Our school is located in the highest poverty area of our city.

My students are identified as Special Education students who are all intellectually disabled. Due to this they learn an alternative curriculum then their same-aged non-special education peers. This alternative curriculum is called Life Skills Support. In addition to learning basic skills, they are also learning how to care for themselves and basic job skills. Our school is the beacon of hope for students, their families, and the neighborhood as a whole.

My Project

On the first day of school, students will anxiously await their recess time to catch up with friends and be outside. Rather then being met with an enclosed space by 12 foot wrought iron fencing and the scenery of dilapidated buildings, run down warehouses and neighborhood strife. Rather then students having limited to no recess supplies and nothing to do, they will have a variety of items, balls and fitness/ sport equipment to greet them. Unlike previous years, they will all have access to the recess items and can spend the their time playing and increasing relationships/ team building skills, self-esteem and exercising. Students will be able to utilize the recess items to forget about their surroundings and enjoy being outside and being a kid which for many students may only be during that thirty minute period on a daily basis. Many of my students are not allowed to go outside when they are home due to neighbor strife and this is the only time they have, so please help me make it count!

Donations to this project would improve my classroom and more importantly my students' lives by giving them a sense of ownership and teaching them responsibility to care for their own things.

The donations would help students to enjoy being a kid even if for only 30 minutes and be a distraction to their surroundings and strife/ responsibilities that may be facing them outside of the school day. It would make a difference by teaching them others outside our school and families care about them!
