Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 28 bright and eager ESL students that are ready to learn and improve their English language skills everyday they come to school. My class this year is composed of beginner, intermediate, and advanced students whose primary language is Spanish or Arabic.
I have to help my students learn English as well as improve their current language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Although they struggle in the English language, I can tell that they are very eager to learn because they love to ask questions in class! My students who know more English than others, are happy to help out another student when they have trouble with a task.
Our public school serves a low-socioeconomic area, where 80% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Though my students this year may have many challenges to overcome, I know that they will be eager to learn and I need your help to achieve this!
My Project
My students need nonfiction comprehension quickie cards that will help them improve their reading skills. These cards will be used by my intermediate and advanced ELL students in small groups to practice comprehension skills. The high-interest passages are at different reading levels and are simple enough to review skills.
The reading materials I am asking for are at different grade levels so that my diverse group of ELL learners can each practice improving their skills at their appropriate language level.
The match and sort reading comprehension quickies will be two different sets of cards that will help my beginner ELL students as well as my more advanced ELL students build reading concepts such as sequencing and making inferences. These cards sets can be used individually by students that makes learning fun.
The nonfiction reading comprehension cards will be used by my beginner and intermediate ELL students so they can boost their reading skills in a challenging and engaging manner. The write and wipe cards and content-rich text will engage students in their learning.
The English language development activity cards include four different leveled sets of cards that will help all my ELL students practice and better develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. These cards can be used by individual students, small groups, or whole class. Also the two pencil sharpeners that I am requesting will help our classroom be better prepared by having our pencils sharpened and ready to go so we can complete our classwork!
