This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an inner city, low-income school in Indianapolis. A full 100% of the students at my school receive free lunch. My 28 fourth graders come to school with differing needs and backgrounds, but they are all willing and ready to learn and grow.
Although most of my students come to school without daily necessities, I believe it is my duty to provide them with a safe and comfortable environment where they can do their best each and every day.
My students are tremendously hardworking and strive to grow, create, and learn!
My Project
My students come to school experiencing a plethora of different issues each and every day. With all that these scholars have to endure, I do not believe that coming to school unsure of where your food or clothes are going to come from should be one of those issues.
Student poverty is the dominate new reality.
How can I expect my scholars to come to school ready to give me 100% if they are hungry, or are wearing the same dirty clothes day after day? How can scholars focus on what matters in their education when they are worried about food or clothes? I have had several of these projects funded for clothes and food, I am doing another one because my food and clothes "pantry" are depleted and I have a brand new group of kids coming in next year, and I know the need will be there.
The food allows me to provide breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner for students at a whim. It allows me to give a kid an extra serving that is so hungry from the night before. It allows me to help my students feel secure that they will never leave our school wondering where their next meal will come from.
The clothes are a special request. Many scholars wear the same shirt and pants each day, and when they outgrow them, they continue to wear them until they literally cannot anymore. The shirts, pants, and socks allow me to give our families the comfort of knowing they have a spare shirt or pants to wear when things get dirty.
This project is about helping inner city kids who are the most vulnerable, feel SECURE in their food and clothing needs.
