My Students
Our k-8 school is located in the heart of South Brooklyn. My 8th graders come from many different backgrounds and experiences. Many were not born in this country and for them English is not their native language. As a result, they struggle with the vast text content that they encounter throughout the day both in reading and writing and other subjects as well. To help them and the rest of the students by providing rigorous academics through working with Teacher's College, fantastic teachers and staff and a safe learning environment. We teach character development through Leader in Me and the 7 habits as well as offer arts, music and after school clubs to meet the needs of our students. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school, college and beyond.
My Project
Like most teenagers, 8th graders would rather watch youtube than CNN. But with Junior Scholastic magazine, they can have access to the world around them. And what better way than with news articles written just for them! These articles will be used as read-alouds and discussed in class as well as sources for writing.
A subscription to Junior Scholastic magazine will help every 8th grader in my school learn current events, read editorial articles and be more informed about the world outside their door.
Reading Informational texts are extremely important and vital for the 8th grader to be ready to move on to high school an the world beyond. This standards based magazine will help them meet their goals whole maintaining their interest.
