I have 21st century learners in my room, but the computers they use barely stay charged without being plugged into the wall, have missing keys, and don't have the capability of new programs and apps due to lacking memory and slow processing speeds.
My students are in an impoverished neighborhood and attend a Title One school where over 90% of them receive free lunch.
They come to school each day with a thirst for knowledge and the need to be successful. They are often faced with challenges in their homes and neighborhoods that they carry with them each day.
My Project
The Chromebooks would add a whole new element to my classroom--students can work in pairs to research topics in reading, writing, social studies, and science. Everyone would have a chance to use the Internet at the same time--no more sharing one computer between 4 people. This time saver, allows students to dig deeper into the content, analyze pertinent information, and use what is necessary.
The Chromebooks would allow students to use the most relevant and up-to-date apps and resources. Students can use Google Docs in live time by responding to survey questions, participating in class projects, and answering test questions. Students can link their learning to real-life applications--creating their own surveys to collect data and analyzing the results, uploading their own tutorial videos for others to view, and responding to literature via podcast!
Their eyes will light up with the thought of all the possibilities!
With all the obstacles my students face, the last thing they need to worry about is not having the necessary 21st century skills needed to be successful in the career paths they choose.
Theodore Roosevelt once said "far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." Please help give my students a chance to show their true potential!
