Help turn my speech & language students into SOCIAL DETECTIVES!

Help me give my students the tools they need to become the best SOCIAL DETECTIVES! I am requesting comic books, games and posters from the Social Thinking curriculum created by Michelle Garcia Winner, a fellow speech-language pathologist!

My Students

"Ms. B, can I try again?" I never get tired of hearing this! I work with special needs children who have difficulty with speech and language development.

My students attend a NYC public school and all receive mandated speech-language therapy to help them access the curriculum.

Their communication needs vary greatly. I work on improving their receptive, expressive and social thinking skills as well as speech intelligibility. Many of my students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Selective Mutism, Intellectual Disabilities, ADHD, Social Communication Disorders and Cerebral Palsy.

My Project

Social thinking is the process by which we interpret the thoughts, emotions and actions of another person along with the context of the situation to understand that person’s experience. A kid's social thinking ability has a significant impact on his or her relationships and success in school and at work. Some of my students struggle with learning these skills naturally through their environment and need more explicit teaching to develop these skills.

The Social Thinking materials I am requesting provide a cognitive behavioral curriculum which helps students develop further awareness of their own thinking and social behaviors and learn strategies to help them develop better self-regulation across a range of behaviors.

I am asking for the WeThinkers! Volume 2 package because it is a continuation of the first volume of 5 books which I have for my younger students (ages 4-7). It consists of 5 books which deepen social thinking for my kindergartners and first-graders. For my third-fifth graders, I am requesting several comic books from the Superflex curriculum including You are a Social Detective!, Superflex and Kool Q. Cumber, BrainEater and Focus Tron. My students love comic books and these fun and engaging books will help my students learn about the "unthinkables" that hinder their social thinking while also learning the strategies needed to defeat them!! Lastly, I am requesting a set of posters for visual support and several games to make the sessions fun while practicing their problem solving skills.
