Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Righty-tighty, lefty loosey". This is one of the first things high school students learn when they join my Robotics teams. Many of them have never had the opportunity to turn a wrench or a screwdriver or to drill a hole through a piece of metal or wood. After their first year, not only do they know the names of tools and how to use them; they are able to work independently to build their own projects.

In the school's makerspace, kids learn and practice the fundamentals of design, manufacturing, and engineering.

Many of them hope to become architects, designers, or engineers. Through competition, students on Robotics teams learn to use engineering design processes to solve real problems. Not only so they develop designs, they also prototype, test, and refine them in ways that would be difficult and costly in a classroom environment.

There is a small group of students at this school that is very enthusiastic about engineering and robotics. In the past there has been no structured outlet for their creative energies. By turning the Robotics club into a Robotics team, these students will gain unforgettable experiences in the next school year.

My Project

Narbonne High School students are so enthusiastic about Robotics Engineering that they started a Robotics Club on their own. I've joined them as their faculty sponsor, and I'm helping then turn their Robotics Club into a Robotics Team.

Robotics teams require computers for both design and programming.

We use them to create 3D models of our robot designs. Sometimes, we send the models to a 3D printer. Occasionally, we may even send files to a machinist who can cut custom parts on computer-controlled machines.

Most importantly, we use computers to program our robots. Without a program to take in information from sensors, process it, and command the robot to react, a device is not a robot; it's just a remote-controlled machine.

These computers will enable us to turn a Robotics club, which has done some tinkering and learning, into a Robotics team, in which members can push their limits, expand their knowledge, and grow through interscholastic competition.
