Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students involved in our All-State production of Big Fish are from all across Illinois. They are from a variety of school sizes and have a variety of theatre experiences at their school—from large programs in suburbs to smaller programs in small schools without much support or schools in the city of Chicago without much funding.
They gathered for five weekends to learn and build an entire Broadway quality show that was the pride of the Illinois High School Theatre Festival in January.
Earning almost perfect scores, they were chosen as one of five productions in the nation to perform on the main Lied stage at the International Thespian Festival in June.
As the Illinois All-State show, our show is currently in storage and has been since January. We are renting trailers, and on top of that, we have to transport all of these to Lincoln, Nebraska. Students have already contributed their own fundraising efforts to help with fees for the festival, and we are trying to help keep costs low for them. These students are loving and supportive and now they need your support!
My Project
Our students rehearsed one weekend a month for five months to create an amazing production. We were chosen as one of the main stage performances at the International Thespian Festival (ITF). Performing at the festival is amazing, but the ITF also has workshop leaders from NYC and LA, people our students in Illinois do not have access to in their everyday lives. They will get to see the best of high school theatre from around the country AND participate in days of professional workshops with professional actors, directors, and choreographers.
By providing money for transportation, our students will not have to worry about added costs and can focus on performing the best show possible.
