My students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of their parents are forced to work out-of-state to provide for their families while the children are raised solely by one or two elderly grandparents.
While they are with me, I focus on their strengths and interests.
I ensure I am creating a warm and loving environment by greeting them with a hug and complimenting them on their shoes, clothing and anything they feel proud of. I know they are faced with many hardships at home, with much separation anxiety, never knowing when they will see their parents next. But my classroom is a loving warm environment where they can relax and rely on me to always be there, to believe in them, cheering them on, in their learning endeavors.
My Project
The printer in our classroom is a basic necessity which benefits my students from basic understanding of concepts, to book creations. Many of my students are bilingual learners and do not understand any English. One of the methods which I use to communicate with English Language Learners is through visuals.
Visuals allow for all students in my class to participate and comprehend concepts being discussed.
Prior to lessons I ensure to have visuals of key concepts and vocabulary, which allows all the students in my class to participate in the lessons. Students who are English Language Learners gain understanding through visual and monolingual learners gain vocabulary knowledge.
Students frequently use the printer to create alphabet books and self-portrait books which helps them gain understanding of print knowledge.
