My students need kits to conduct the most interesting lab in AP Biology: genotyping! With budget cuts, the only way we can continue to do this lab is with donations.
Help us train the scientists and great thinkers of tomorrow! The most engaging and interesting lab we conduct in AP Biology is to have students examine their own genes for PTC tasting. This lab allows students to become proficient in biotechnology techniques. It generates interest in science.
My students attend a large public high school outside a major city in Colorado.
Most students have parents that move to this district to allow their sons and daughters a chance to succeed in education and careers that they never had. Similar to the makeup of the United States, my students are about 45% minority and 55% white or Asian. They come from poverty up to middle class backgrounds. They are truly kind, and hard-working.
My Project
I have conducted this laboratory activity in the last two years of AP Biology, and most students cite it as THE reason they choose to study science or continue education and training in biotechnology. This lab turns students into scientists--it allows them to take samples of their own DNA, use a technique called PCR to make billions of copies of identical DNA, and then analyze their own genes to determine their genotype for a specific trait.
You can make the difference in turning students into scientists.
The only way I can continue this project in class is through donations. Please consider helping these hard-working, kind, and motivated students learn about biotechnology by doing biotechnology labs in class.
