Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you." (B.B. King, 1998). Help facilitate the best possible learning environment and give the future thinkers of the world something that can never be taken away, knowledge.
My students are resilient, determined immigrants and refugees from all over the world.
Their families risked everything to bring them to the United States in hopes that their children could break out of the cycle of poverty and gang activity so prevalent in their home countries.
Well, the hard part has just begun as these 5th graders start the journey to learning English. My students need access to effective, research-based materials to help them achieve the "American Dream" and become the world's next generation of leaders and innovators.
My Project
My two classes of students come to me in 5th grade from all over the world with priceless experiences and stories, but very little (if any) English language skills. Learning a new language at an older age is much harder and more intimidating when practicing with native English-speaking peers.
They deserve to have a voice.
My school utilizes an online reading program that is individualized and adaptive to fit the unique needs of each student. Through a series of interactive games, stories and articles that are either read by the student or to the student by the program, students learn vocabulary, grammar, and fluency in a fun and engaging way.
However, our classroom does not have any headphones or earbuds, which lowers the effectiveness of the program simply because the room becomes so loud and chaotic with 30 computers reading aloud different stories all at once.
These headphones would help my students focus and allow them to clearly hear the pronunciation of new words while also giving them privacy and the confidence to practice reading aloud without fear of being heard by their peers sitting next to them.
