My Students

How are the needs of high school science labs different today? It more important that high school students have exposure to digital computer equipment in their Chemistry and Physics lab classes as computer technology transforms college education and jobs in fields like science and medicine.

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups. Almost all my students are classified as part of our state’s lowest economic category which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced price lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their families speak at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language) when they began high school, but they have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Since we are not a private school, our science lab programs truly survive from donations or grants, and the state and local district education funds that reach the classroom are insufficient to keep up with even the minimal technological standards.

My Project

If you have ever been in a Chemistry or Physics classroom or observed one on TV, you likely saw students working together to perform an experiment while constantly and carefully reading and recording the data. In the gas law experiment "Determination of Absolute Zero," students use a pressure gauge and a thermometer. One student reads the pressure at the exact same time that another student reads the temperature and a third student records the data. In a second experiment, students connect a pressure gauge to a syringe and then read and record the pressure values resulting from changes in volume. After each experiment, students can create a graph from the data for further analysis. My students need 2 Vernier LabQuest Mini stations and 1 gas pressure probe to perform computer-linked chemistry experiments. When using a Vernier LabQuest and gas pressure sensor, students can collect more precise lab data in less time. The computer probe records the pressure and temperatures and provides a real-time graph on screen. This technology allows students to perform two experiments instead of just one in a class.

For a few years, I have been working to modernize the lab experience for my Chemistry and Physics students.

The LabQuest Mini items that I am requesting will give our public school students a chance to gain some basic experience with computerized digital technology. Today, we all benefit from the computer technology for our work and leisure. It would be great if my students can gain basic computer technology to motivate them and to enhance their educational experience in preparing for college.
