My Students

My students are as great as they come. I work in a very rural area where approximately 9.8% of the population below the poverty level, the median income for the area is $52,708.00. Of the 644 students 283 of them qualify for free or reduced lunch services. The area is a rural valley in the center of Utah where most of the population are farmers or ranchers and the children are planning to follow in the footsteps of their parents.

You will never meet a more polite and generally good group of kids anywhere else.

The student body here is used to the limited opportunities and financial restrictions common to their rural valley but they are deserving of so much more. I want to be able to help them have greater opportunities and help them brighten their horizons.

My Project

NSHS is one of the most unique schools I have worked for. It is part of a district that is among the poorest districts in the state of Utah. In 2009 the district had approximately 9.8% of the population below the poverty level, the median income for the area is $52,708.00. Of the 644 students 283 of them qualify for free or reduced lunch services. The area is a rural valley in the center of Utah where most of the population are farmers or ranchers and the children are planning to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Most Families here are focused on working to provide food and shelter and don’t have extra time or money for equipment or gym memberships. There are only two established private exercise facilities and one Rec Center in North Sanpete county and because of this lack of availability and more rural mindset, exercise is not a major focus in the community. Our school fitness center is very limited in what it offers to students and our P.E. equipment is in large part in bad repair and consequently health and fitness are not priorities in the school. If you are not an athlete who likes traditional weightlifting or circuit training you really have limited options with the current setup.

Having the ability to update our equipment would make a major change in the community culture for the students and tip the scales toward increased fitness and wellness behavior.

These kids are used to using substandard equipment but that is not a good thing. Kids need to have exceptional experiences with fitness so they develop the fitness for life desire.
