Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States, not too far from the richest district. Entering sixth grade, they are already years behind their more affluent counterparts in both math and reading.
We don't let their zip code dictate their future.
Our goal as a school is to get our students to and through college. Our students are three times more likely to graduate from a four year college or university than the low-income average. Our students work hard and have fun.
My Project
Every classroom needs the basic materials to help the students learn. Going into my 19th year as a 6th-grade math teacher, these materials are always in high demand at the beginning of the year and will help my students' performance in the classroom starting on Day 1!
My students' success should not depend on materials that they do or do not have.
Pre-sharpened pencils and sharpeners will ensure that meaningless time isn't spent searching in book bags or distracting others for something to write with. Students using a whiteboard and dry erase markers are a great way to increase student engagement, but unfortunately, the markers don't last too long.
