Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a title I school (many of the students are on free or reduced priced lunch). This school is in the most diverse city in the country.
I teach RSP English 8th grade for over 100 students. Many of these students filled out in a class survey that writing in their English class is a "Weakness" for them.
I want to help these students by fostering a spirit of "authorship". Through writing one gains confidence and builds skills. The group would learn reading and writing skills by reading the Weekly Reader writing magazines and participating in some of the contests and activities the magazine puts forth.
These kids would be empowered as many of them have not been successful in language arts courses in the past, due to their reading disabilities. This will help boost their self-esteem, increase standardized test scores, and make them capable and functioning adults in our society.
