My Students

Do you remember the excitement of designing your own experiments and testing them? My students get just as excited, but their creativity and desire for scientific knowledge are constantly limited by a lack of resources.

My students attend an inner city high school and don't have access to basic experimental equipment to test their great ideas.

In this class, the students design their own experiments to see what might have an effect on the ripening, rotting, or preserving of fruit. Can you imagine doing these types of experiments without access to a refrigerator or freezer? How would you test temperature? My students get excited about the opportunity to design and test their own experiments, but are often frustrated by the lack of resources available to them. They often come up with great ideas but have no way to test them! I want to give me students the opportunity to explore as many of their own ideas as possible in order to increase their love of science.

My Project

With a new refrigerator and freezer, the students will be able to test how different temperatures might affect their experiments. Students will be able to see if freezing a fruit is better than refrigerating it or leaving it at room temperature. Students will learn how temperature affects the fruit from its overall taste and quality down to its cellular structure. Through their experiments and their background research, students will be able to explain why temperature has an effect. A refrigerator is an incredibly necessary resource in any scientific laboratory. With this equipment, the students will be able to create experiments of their own design. It will increase the number and types of experiments that students can create. It will improve their overall experimental design.

It is so important for students to be able to design and investigate their experiments.

Not only will students gain invaluable first hand scientific knowledge, but they will also be able to enhance their creativity and critical thinking skills. Project based learning and experimentation provides students with skills that help them to problem solve, not just in science, but throughout their lives.
