The GREEN finishes its first year as a total success!
While teaching seniors AP Environmental Science, one of my more inspired students returned from a summer camp last year with plenty of goals and dreams for our school. He wanted to make a difference in the world and together, we established an environmental club, The GREEN, that we ran primarily through my APES class. While I expected the class to get involved in the program, I never dreamed that the idea of being "green" would spread through the school and result in a club of 50+ members who voluntarily gave up their time after school and on weekends to clean up local roads, sponsor a shoe drive for the needy and educate other students about the global public health crisis (worldwide AIDS epidemic). Students came together to help clean up the area around the school and community and I couldn't have been prouder of them.
One of the major projects my students wanted to tackle was promoting recycling around the campus. We started a recycling drive, centered in my classroom, and encouraged other teachers to send their recyclables to us where we would collect and take those items to the local recycling center. While using cardboard boxes in my classroom was effective, I think having several receptacles around campus would have an even greater impact across campus.
By funding the purchase of 6 recycling receptacles, you could help us increase our collection efforts immensely. With the bins strategically located in high traffic areas around campus, students would learn the benefits of recycling, rather than throwing away items that can be refashioned for future use. If we get this grant, we can truly make a difference in our high school and hopefully the students will even take our message home!
By making your generous donations, you will empower the students to be decision-makers and more responsible individuals in today's society. By conserving the world's resources through the process of recycling, the future won't seem nearly as bleak as it's been painted. Daily, as I review the major concepts of environmental science, I point out to my students that the future of this Earth and its gifts relies upon their stewardship and desire for sustainable goals. You could help us make the difference between having ample resources and using them to depletion!
