My Students

A typical day in my classroom includes 20 six-year-old students with allergies, colds, and other illnesses as well as an additional four students absent due to illness. We move from one activity to the next, sharing classroom supplies. They enjoy sharing and share everything, including their germs.

My students are very social and love spending time with each other.

My 24 students are often in close quarters, especially on wet days when we are forced to spend 6 hours in our classroom. When we do get outside, recess is often filled with tag, hugging, and other touch required games as well as using the playground equipment. On an average day, Carolina International School has 30-40 absences due to illness, and more during flu season. Many of these absences could be avoided with proper hygiene and sanitation.

My Project

The students will use the books in small groups to discuss germs and how they are transmitted. After the discussions, six students will take over the job of My students need books about the ways germs spread and tissues and disinfecting wipes to help combat the spreading of germs in the classroom. Sanitation Officers in the classroom each week will be in charge of washing tables before and after lunch and snack and at the end of the day, as well as making sure that they are using a tissue instead of their hands or sleeves when necessary. The remaining students will be Sanitation Support Officers and will positively recognize Officers who are following the Sanitation Guidelines and gently reminding those who are not.

This project will be a leading factor in the decrease of student absences due to illness in my classroom.

It will also help my students make better choices about personal hygiene. My students will also begin spreading the word about germs to other students in the school and their families, allowing them to become school and community leaders.
