This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 12th grade English in a magnet program that emphasizes college prep and the digital arts. Our 12th grade program is interdisciplinary in that our English class is thematically tied to their Economics and Principles of American Democracy classes. This allows us to offer students an academic experience that more closely reflects the contemporary 21st century world that surrounds them outside of the classroom.
Our students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and strive to be critical, independent thinkers who want to have a prominent voice in today's world.
They are hungry to learn and to be challenged by a curriculum that they feel is both valuable and relevant. Our students are from very diverse backgrounds, and most choose to continue their education by attending college after they graduate.
My Project
My English 12 course strives to get students thinking about questions that every engaged adult should be thinking about: What are the characteristics of a meaningful life? What drives our behavior? What should society be like and what is our role in it? How can we make the future better than the past, and what role does literature play in this? My goal is to encourage the development of the mental lives of my students through writing and literature.
Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" is a classic novella that provides the perfect opportunity for students to explore the ways in which literature can help us better understand ourselves and to help us create the kind of lives that we want.
But, students cannot engage meaningfully in reading and studying these texts without their own individual copies of each. Our school currently has a limited number of decrepit copies that are shared amongst fifteen teachers. Having our own class set of 70 books will reach all of our magnet seniors each year, and should hopefully inspire decades of lifelong readers and learners!
