My Students
Our student population is racially diverse. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class comes and goes during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them.
All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and since we are located near two military bases, many of them are the children of deployed military personnel.
Our school is not a Title I School, but my students have needs that are not being met by our school.
My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty and they are handicapped by a lack of resources. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.
My Project
Gaston Caperton once said, "The gap in education in this country, the unfairness in schools, is one of the great unfairness in this society." My students suffer from this unfairness. They need technology to enter the 21st century on equal footing with others. Help them bridge the unfairness gap.
My class has a significant number of military dependents and I have students, particularly males, who are in danger of failing the key academic areas of reading, science and math.
We have just learned that they will need to take their standard assessment composition test on line. As a result, they need to learn how to keyboard. My students love technology but have very limited access. In order to improve reading, writing and research skills, my sixth graders need four HP Chromebooks and two pencil sharpeners.
I desperately need these Chromebooks so I can help my students learn keyboarding skills while developing their reading and writing skills. I plan to set up a lab in my room where they can work.
My goal is to have all my students learn 21st century skills so they can participate fully in their education. Most students live in a world filled with technology. I need to harness the technology of that world and bring it into my classroom. I need greater accessibility for my students. My school is a poor school and could never afford this type of access. My school is close to two military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel. Help me to help my students.
