My students need a laptop to program their robot named "Grumpy." Team Grumpy is a FIRST LEGO League team learning about science, tech, engineering and math in a fun way!

My Students
My goal is to prepare students for the 21st century. Career pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering and Science must be established at an early age. I use LEGO robotics as the "hook" to engage students in these areas. They learn by doing. They learn from each other. They learn by having FUN!
I teach at a Title I school where 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, 80% speak a language other than English at home, but our Academic Performance Index is less than 10 points away from the Federally mandated goal of 800.
In other words, our students achieve far above what most people would expect from them. However, we the teachers, know our students are capable of exceptional work and our robotics program is proving this every year as witnessed by the phenomenal growth of our program.
Robotics has grown from an after school club with 10 students in 2007 into a district approved program of three, year-long elective classes. Because of our success, the district wants to implement robotics classes at all middle schools and start after school clubs at all of the elementary schools.
We still have our after school robotics club and Donors Choose has helped us grow by providing us with materials we can't afford to buy. We don't charge fees or dues so we rely on donations.
My Project
We use LEGO Mindstorms robots. They are self-autonomous, in other words, everything the robot does is programmed into the "brain." It is NOT operated by remote control. We use laptops to program the robots. Team Grumpy was formed this year because we needed to add a third team to our robotics club. We were able to find another robot but the team needs a laptop.
We don't need a super-duper laptop, just a basic computer to program and access the Internet. With this laptop, Team Grumpy will be able to program their robot named "Grumpy" and use the internet to complete a research project about senior citizens and find solutions to the myriad of problems facing the elderly. They will learn how scientists and engineers use the scientific method and iterative design to arrive at solutions to real world problems people face daily, not just problems in a book.
The students on Team Grumpy need a laptop computer so they can program their LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot and access the internet to conduct research.
We will use this laptop everyday and hopefully we will be able to use it for several years.
Your donation will provide students without the financial means to purchase their own materials, and an opportunity to engage in powerful project-based inquiry learning activities to prepare them for careers in science, tech, engineering, and math. Thank you!
