I need 23 copies of Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL, by Posey and Novak, to bring our professional learning and equitable access to learning for our students to reality.

My Students

Our students are amazing from diverse backgrounds with varying levels of need academically and personally. These customers of ours live and go to school on the southeast side of the third largest urban area of our state. We have students who are homeless or share dwellings with multiple families to families living the middle class dream. One thing all of our students and their families share is uniqueness, diversity and love.

The focus we have in our school is helping students and staff become more self-aware, responsive and socially interactive by building authentic relationships, attending to each of our learners needs, and engaging all in that process.

One way in which we seek to further our work is to elevate teacher and staff journeys into Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The book, Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL, by Posey and Novak, will help us transition and fully embrace UDL without the overwhelm of a "just one more thing" obstacle mindset.

Our students will be forever served by our staff engaging in the learning this book and ongoing related professional learning has to offer.

My Project

Our teachers are champions of their students and are fully committed to providing equitable access to learning, and developing classroom environments in which all students are included and held to high expectations. To take us to the next level and embracing Universal Design for Learning (UDL), teachers will experience a comprehensive professional learning series for which the book "Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL", by Posey and Novak, is central.

Our professional learning will comprise a four-part book study of "Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL", intermittent professional development to reinforce the focus of their reading and examining potential barriers to implementation, and weekly PLC sessions in which teachers incorporate learning by collaboratively designing expanded Engagement, Representation, and Action and Expression opportunities for students learning and the data measures by which they will determine effectiveness.

Our goal is to be fully literate in UDL, demonstrate committed beliefs to its value to our learning community, and have identified a successful schoolwide implementation approach for the 2022-23 school year by the end of April, 2022.
