"In diversity, there is beauty and there is strength" - Maya Angelou
Please help our students learn about other cultures so that they can better understand the world around them.
My students are in an urban district with over 95% of students living in high poverty.
They also come from all over the world, a lot of them being refugees. Somalia, Mexico, DR Congo, Vietnam, Bhutan, Nepal, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Thailand, Dominican Republic, Cuba, ...and many more!! What a great opportunity to share and learn about the lives of others! School funding has been low, and we have been doing our best, but the children at our school need your help. I see over 550 amazingly talented students. Creating understanding and appreciating our school and world community is what this project is all about. Empowering students through art and cultures.
My Project
I am requesting gyotaku fish molds so my students can learn the art and culture of Japan. Before photographs, Japanese fisherman needed a way to prove the size of the fish that they've caught. In 19th century Japan, fishing boats were equipped with rice paper, sumi-e ink, and brushes in order to create gyotaku: elaborate rubbings of freshly caught fish. (Some versions of this origin story suggest they did so at the emperor's behest.) Help my students create their own gyotaku by providing us with these supplies for a great learning opportunity. These supplies can be used for YEARS to come. We will send you your very own gyotaku fish print as a thank you!
You will make a difference by providing a cultural art learning experience for children.
Help them learn about the history of the world around them. The great news is, the supplies can be used for years and years, so you will be giving to thousands of children! Thank you in advance for your support. We can't wait to show you what the children have created with your generosity!
