This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a special education teacher servicing 1st-5th grade students in bilingual education program at a public school. The majority of my students come from Spanish-speaking homes and are learning English as a second language. The current intervention I'm using is helping them learn to read, but it's not enough for my 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students, who are already years behind their classmates. Many of my students, who have dyslexia and/or ADHD, are bored by the first-grade level texts we're using to practice reading. My students see their classmates reading interesting chapter books that they'd like to read. However, when they open these books and try to read the first page, they feel defeated because there are so many words that they do not yet know how to decode.

Here's where Evidence-Based Literacy Intervention (EBLI) comes in!

I learned about this literacy program from two of my colleagues, a former special education teacher and a speech-language pathologist, who are already trained in this program. My colleagues have shared with me how they are seeing students' motivation and engagement in reading increase. This program explicitly teaches the decoding and spelling skills students need to access grade-level textbooks and express themselves in writing. It gives them plenty of practice opportunities so they can learn to read more quickly.

As a lover of reading who is passionate about teaching all students to learn to read, I am eager to be trained in this program as soon as possible. Thank you for considering this request. Your contribution will help me to make sure that I'm sending my students to middle school with the skills they need to become lifelong readers and writers!
