Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 31 year old teacher of a class of 24 bright, loving and special second grade students. I work in a very impoverished area of the South Bronx. My school is a "barrier free" school. This means that we open our doors to all children, regardless of their physical limitations. Children with physical handicaps make up a large part of my school's population. It brings me great joy to see children in wheelchairs, and children with walkers and canes attending school and acquiring the same education as the rest of the children in the neighborhood.
My students reading abilities range from the beginning stages of emergent reading all the way to fluent readers with excellent comprehension. I do not have any tools or supplies to support my children's reading abilities. I desperately need to teach my emergent readers basic skills such as creating and reading simple sentences. I also need to challenge my advanced students with meaningful tasks that will keep them engaged, interested and far above grade level. I am doing the best I can with what I have, but I know that I can push my students even further with some well needed reading supplies and tools.
I need basic reading tools like books with simple words and patterns for my emergent readers. I also need tactile tools like magnetic letters and sponge letters so my students who are more visual can see the words and sentences that they are creating. I would love to have read-along chapter books on CDs and mystery solving comprehension kits for my advanced readers. These types of activities will greatly help all of my students in their reading endeavors.
I would be above and beyond grateful to receive the supplies that I have asked for for my students. They are an amazing bunch of kids and they deserve the world. Little by little, I'm giving them as much as I possibly can!
