Help Support the Westhill Vikings Baseball Program
Help me give my students a new hack attack pitching machine. This is a top of the line pitching machine that can throw various pitches at a variety of speeds.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Stamford has always been a city with a deep baseball history and a very strong love for the sport. The history and love continues at WHS. Our players have grown up playing in the local youth leagues and now represent their high school, and their city, with the highest level of pride. The WHS baseball players are a focused and driven group of student-athletes with many succeeding both on the field and in the classroom. We are extremely proud that almost 100% of our seniors graduate and go on to college.
In recent years, budget cuts to the athletics program have made it difficult to keep up with the amount of coaches and the equipment needed to stay competitive in the highly talented FCIAC.
In addition, field space and gymnasium availability makes it very difficult for our Junior Varsity and Freshman programs to get what they need to grow as players and as a program. Our athletes are members of a diverse, highly populated, urban school community. Over half of our school population are English Language Learners, and in our classroom alone you will find a variety of languages and cultures are represented.
My Project
Our practice time, space and equipment is very limited. We do our best to utilize what we have while maximizing practice time. Baseball is a sport which has the potential to have a lot of standing around time. However, our goal each and every practice is to have everyone involved, everyone moving, and everyone working to get better at all times.
The Hack Attack pitching machines are used by many of the top High School and Collegiate Programs in the nation.
We already have one Hack Attack machine and it gets used on a daily basis by all three of our teams. Adding an additional machine would enable two teams to use one at the same time. For example Varsity could use one outside on the field while JV/Freshman use one inside in the batting cages. Furthermore, having a machine of this quality enables our players to practice in more authentic game scenarios. It also increases the number of repetitions for each player and improves the efficiency of our practices.
