Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the third grade teacher at Bronx Little School which is located in Bronx, New York. It is a small school with classes from Pre-K through 5th grade. There is only one class per grade with each class having approximately 20 students. We are a very family oriented school and each student is well known by the entire staff. The size and environment of the school provides the opportunity to truly develop and maintain meaningful relationships with our students. We are a growing school with new incoming students each year. However, the school will remain small maintaining just one class per grade. Last year was my first year and my classroom only had 4 children's dictionaries available for my 19 students. Although, the students were able to share them, the children weren't able to get as much use out of the dictionaries as they could if there had been enough for each student. The students were encouraged to look up any new words they came across. However, because the dictionaries were always being used, students were disheartened because they had to wait so long. Due to the long waits, students got very little practice actually using the dictionaries and sadly, their dictionary skills were less than I would have hoped. They were apprehensive about using the dictionaries and were not confident they would even be able to glean any useful information if and when they found what they were looking for. My intention is for each student to have a dictionary for their own personal use. Dictionaries will be used both for research and challenging games each day to teach the children quality dictionary skills and to improve their confidence in the usefulness of dictionaries. Then, the students will feel confident in their own abilities to utilize the dictionaries that are available. Dictionaries are such a common resource used in life. Students need to know how to access the information that is available to them at just at their fingertips. Once their ability to use dictionaries improves and is solidified, their vocabulary will improve with it as they are able to learn the definitions of new and challenging words they come across. They will be able to use difficult words in their writing as they begin to learn how to locate words based on their knowledge of spelling. I will need approximately 25 new or used children's dictionaries as my maximum class size is 24. It was a shock to me that my students were afraid to use dictionaries. I realized that it was because they didn't know how to use them or have enough positive experiences with dictionaries. With these 25 dictionaries for my class, my students will each have a dictionary all for themselves and will be able to have positive experiences to solidify their dictionary skills. Having a dictionary for one's personal use seems like such a simple thing but the lack of it has hampered these students progress with vocabulary. You can make such a foundational difference in student's progress and provide them with the opportunity to strengthen their developmental skills early on in their academic journey. Thank you so much for your interest in helping the public schools. The students and staff are grateful for your generosity.
