This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Though many of my students begin the year performing below grade level in Language Arts, this year I have a large group who entered first grade reading at a Pre-Kindergarten level. I want to give them as much support as possible to get them reading at grade level.
Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged urban neighborhood with a high immigrant population.
Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are a creative and lively bunch who love to read to each other, dance, and sing karaoke!
My Project
Your donation will be used to purchase resources from Lakeshore Learning to support my lower performing students this year and for years to come! Mastering high frequency words is critical in early literacy. Students will learn to read sight words using the leveled Non-fiction Sight Word Readers, as well as the Sight Word Sentences center. Another important foundation skill is recognizing rhyming words and word patterns. Students will read the Rhyming Books and practice reading and writing from the Phonics Flip Books to help build these foundation skills. The Hear Myself Sound Phones will be used by students while they read so that they can focus on sounds, as well as monitor their reading to catch errors, helping to master reading fluency. My hope is that, with targeted instruction and engaging materials, these students will be at grade level (or really, really close) by the end of the school year.
By providing my students with engaging games and materials that target specific reading needs (phonemic awareness, sight word recognition, word pattern recognition) you are helping them build the skills that will make them successful readers!
