My Project
I am a somewhat inexperienced second-career teacher of high school English in an urban school district serving mostly low-income scholars. Here I am often challenged by a variety of obstacles, from children with situational deficits in their academic foundations to children with exceptional needs. They run the gamut, with some needing help to get a qualifying score on the Advanced Placement exam, and others struggling to pass a state-mandated English requirement or to raise their ACT scores. Many merely struggle with their motivation and study skills, while others actually need remedial instruction to reach proficiency in a fundamental subject area, so meeting all these disparate needs can be challenging. Another tough issue is that, although my content knowledge is top-knotch, I frequently struggle to find innovative ways to make that content engaging and "sticky" for my teen scholars. I really want to be a better teacher, because that's what my scholars need and deserve, so I'm always looking for paths to personal improvement.
That need to become a better, more effective teacher is why I want to pursue National Board certification, as one teacher quoted on the NBPTS website called her certification journey the "most impactful professional development" she has ever taken.
According to NBPTS, research shows that Board-certified educators learn more than their peers who don't have Board-certified teachers, and "the positive impact of having a Board-certified teacher is even greater for [minority and economically disadvantaged] students. The promise of a process to give me knowledge and skills to make me more effective in the classroom is one I find hard to resist. I am looking for any way to make more of an impact where I am, and I believe going through National Board certification can help hone my pedagogy in ways that will benefit my students greatly.
