Preschool disabilities is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or speak. Our group loves to play outside, learn new games, and participate in music.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.
We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion. I teach in a wing of two preschool classes and three developmental. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills to get included. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day.
We are super excited to work on this project to help supply the classroom. We are a disabilities classroom in a Title One school. Most of the children coming into the classroom have never been in a classroom setting before. They are typically 3 when they enter. The parents are nervous as it is about leaving their child for an entire day of learning. Then we ask them to go out and buy supplies to help make the classroom better for their students. I want to take that burden away this year and help the parent focus on their child. The supplies we are asking for will help create a fun, loving, safe environment for each child entering the classroom. We use a ton of visuals in the classroom. The paper, contact paper, laminating sheets and Velcro dots will all help create a routine for the children. The cleaning supplies will help keep the germs from spreading in the classroom, and we are super excited about receiving a soap dispenser that is automatic and will not need to be touched!
