Help Supply Students’ Personal Care, Hygiene, and First Aid Needs!

Help me give my students emergency personal care, hygiene, and first aid products. Teachers who care have to anticipate and try to supply all kinds of needs: bandages, tissues, lip balm, sanitary pads, deodorant, hand lotion, etc.

My Project

When you teach young people, you learn quickly that they have a lot of needs beyond education and school supplies. Last year, my first year teaching high school, I had teen girls coming up to whisper in my ear during class, asking whether I had any feminine products. I had boys coming from gym with a bleeding cut or scrape, wanting a bandage, or this or that kid needing hand lotion, lip balm, eye drops, or Kleenex. Or sometimes, a student was shy about removing a cap because they needed some product to make their hair lay down. It happens!

If I happened to have something in my purse or desk that a kid needed, I was glad; but, more often than not, I didn’t.

And whether a student didn’t have something because they forgot it, or their family couldn’t afford it, or they were caught short by an unexpected need, the reasons didn’t matter. What mattered was that they came to me for help, and I couldn’t.

Of course, for serious problems, injuries or illnesses, a teacher can send a child to the nurse or a counselor; but often, a kid won’t want to take that much time (the nurse might be a long walk, busy, or not in), or he or she might not want to make that big a deal of their needs and will just decide to go without.

I hated to think of any of my kids having to go sit down and just endure whatever discomfort they’re in, all because I hadn’t anticipated some of their very simple and likely needs. I want to do better this year by making sure I keep my classroom “Care Closet” stocked with personal care, hygiene, and first aid supplies my kids are likely to need.
