Help Supply Our Year-Long Math Needs!

My students need notebooks and folders for our basic classroom needs. We fill our notebooks constantly throughout the year and use our folders to organize and turn in work every Friday.

My Students

At our Title I middle school, you would never guess some of the many challenges our students face. Despite 10% of our population being homeless and 85% functioning with 3-4 risk factors, our students come through the doors every day with terrific attitudes and work ethic.

I am proud to be part of helping our racially diverse population of students be empowered and successful.

86% of the 7th and 8th graders here are low income and receive free or reduced lunch, and yet they are among the most brilliant middle school students one could meet.

My Project

Every day students in my classroom utilize two basic necessities: our notebooks and math folders. Our notebooks are full of examples, foldables, and colorful diagrams to help students reference useful information throughout the year. Many students even take their 8th grade math notebooks straight to high school! I have found that many students don't know how to take notes in math class, so providing a constant structure of math notes has become vital to my curriculum.

Our folders are an integral part of my grading system.

Every Friday students turn in their folders, which contains their assignments for the week and also a weekly reflection and "check-in." This allows me to spend valuable time with students that I may not have had during the week via their folders. Monday when they get the folders back, they see both their grade and the feedback I have given them. It also allows me to silently communicate with students about issues that they may be scared to say out loud. The folders are not only part of my students' academic well-being, they are also part of their mental health.
