I teach 5th grade math and science in a high poverty school and district. Often times my students home life isn't the best and school is where they feel safe. However, many of my students have a difficult time affording basic supplies for class.
My students are fifth graders in a rural school in South Carolina, that has a poverty rate of 75%.
My school has over 600 students in 5th and 6th grade. Many come to 5th grade not having the supplies to help them learn and enjoy school.
My Project
In my math and science class we use a lot of hands-on activities that require scissors and colored pencils. Both classes make interactive notebooks that include many types of foldables, notes, and diagrams. I always encourage my students to add color to their notebooks so their work will standout. We use Expo markers daily in math class to practice new skills, play review games, and practice math facts. Lastly, we are in desperate need of a new pencil sharpener. Often times our current pencil sharpener prefers to eat the pencils instead of sharpening them.
